Peppol in Switzerland, what this network really changes for an SME

A European routing network, a requirement that comes from the principal, and three ways to reach it.

The pages that rank on Peppol today are written for markets whose rules are not ours, and they leave the French-speaking Swiss reader with a worry that has no precise object. This page says what Peppol carries, what belongs to eBill, where the requirement comes from when it arrives, and what eleven management programs commonly deployed in Swiss SMEs document as of 23 August 2026.

Peppol carries structured invoices, it does not replace your software

Peppol is an invoice exchange network governed by the OpenPeppol association, which certifies the providers authorised to connect their clients to it and publishes their list. The issuer hands its invoice to an access point, it comes out at the recipient's access point, and the latter's electronic address is resolved through a technical directory called SMP. Odoo, which documents the subject closely, indicates that it holds these two roles of access point and SMP itself, and places Switzerland among the countries eligible for registration.

What circulates is not a document made for the eye but a structured file. Odoo lists the formats it produces, BIS Billing 3.0, XRechnung CIUS, NLCIUS, Factur-X and ZUGFeRD, FatturaPA, Facturae. Every line, every VAT rate and every reference occupies an identified field, which allows the recipient's system to check the document received, Abacus documenting for example an automatic validation of incoming invoices according to EN 16931.

An access point is therefore a certified provider, and that list is public. A software vendor can be an access point itself, rely on a certified third party, or document nothing on the subject. This distinction commands everything else, because it determines whether the connection is settled within an existing subscription or becomes a small project in its own right.

eBill serves Switzerland, Peppol serves Europe, and the two do not overlap

eBill is the Swiss network operated by SIX. An eBill invoice arrives directly in the recipient's e-banking, who approves and pays it. Access goes through a network partner registered with SIX, fifteen entities recorded on 23 August 2026, among them Abacus Research AG, Epsitec SA for Crésus and ePost Service AG for KLARA. That is the channel that counts for an SME whose customers are Swiss.

Peppol does not work that way. It links management systems to one another, and not software to bank accounts. A French-speaking Swiss company invoicing Swiss customers generally has no contact with this network. The same company answering a call for tenders abroad may have this channel imposed by the awarding authority's specifications.

The two networks therefore add up more than they replace each other, and the programs show it well. WinBIZ and Crésus document eBill issuing without Peppol appearing on the pages read, one through PostFinance's e-invoicing platform, the other through the SIX network as a registered partner. Odoo documents Peppol and registration from Switzerland, while no official Odoo page read mentions eBill. Abacus is the only one of the eleven to appear on both sides, as an eBill network partner at SIX and as a vendor describing a Peppol route through its partner Descartes STEPcom.

The Peppol requirement comes from the principal, not from a Swiss register

None of the vendor documentations read on 23 August 2026 reports a general obligation to invoice via Peppol between companies in Switzerland. What these documentations describe are foreign rules. Abacus devotes an article to the electronic invoicing obligation in France, and explains there that Peppol transmission goes through its partner Descartes STEPcom, with support for Factur-X and UBL.

The list of formats moreover betrays the geography of the subject. XRechnung targets Germany, FatturaPA Italy, Facturae Spain, NLCIUS the Netherlands, and Odoo documents them because its customers are subject to them. A French-speaking Swiss SME meets these formats the day a foreign customer imposes them, almost never because a Swiss text asks for it.

The practical consequence is simple. The requirement, when it exists, reads in the specifications of an awarding authority or in the terms of a private principal, with a named format and a deadline. That document triggers the project, and it alone allows knowing which format and which channel are really expected.

Of eleven management programs commonly deployed in Switzerland, one is itself a Peppol access point

On 23 August 2026, we reread the vendors' documentation and the public registers for eleven management programs commonly deployed in Swiss SMEs: Banana Comptabilité Plus, bexio, smallinvoice, KLARA, Crésus, WinBIZ, SelectLine, Infoniqa ONE 50 and ONE 200, Abacus, Odoo and Run my Accounts. Infoniqa ONE 50, which many still know under the name Sage 50 Switzerland, counts only once, the Austrian vendor having taken over Sage's Swiss subsidiary before renaming the products.

A single one, Odoo, acts itself as an access point and as an SMP, its documentation indicating that Switzerland appears among the countries eligible for registration. A second, Abacus, describes a Peppol transmission through its partner Descartes STEPcom, the vendor itself not appearing in the list of certified providers. For the nine others, no official page read mentions the network. A query of the Peppol directory returns no entry for Infoniqa, and bexio does not appear in the list of Peppol Certified Service Providers.

We write not documented on the day of reading, which is not the same as impossible, since a gateway through a certified third party is built outside the product. On the Swiss side, the list of certified providers stays short, two entities domiciled here on 23 August 2026, Btwentyfour AG and ITERON AG, and the association revises it as certifications come. In other words, the task concerns the connection between the software and an access point, more than the choice of the software itself.

Three ways to reach Peppol when your software does not document it

The first route is the access point provider. The company keeps its software, exports its invoices in a format the provider can read, and the provider takes care of the conversion and the routing. It assumes a contract, a rate per document, and exact identification data of the recipient, notably its Peppol address, failing which the invoice does not find its target.

The second route is the gateway built on the existing software. Several products expose a documented REST API, bexio, KLARA, smallinvoice, SelectLine or Infoniqa among others, but none of these documentations describes a webhook, which forces periodic polling. The gateway reads the invoices issued, produces the expected structured file and hands it to the access point. The bulk of the work concerns the field mapping and the acceptance testing with real documents.

The third route consists in moving the invoicing brick to a tool already connected, leaving the accounts where they are. It is defensible when the European volume is set to grow and the current tool will not move. It carries a less visible cost, the double keeping of articles and customers, unless the two tools are connected, which brings back the work of the second route.

Four checks that say whether the question concerns you

The approach holds in four checks you can carry out yourself. Reread the terms of the public or foreign principals you work with, since they name the channel and the format required when there is one. Query the Peppol directory to know whether your customers are registered there, the search being public. Ask your vendor what it documents today, in writing, with a date of reply. Finally consult the list of eBill network partners published by SIX, which says whether your real need belongs to the Swiss channel rather than to the European network.

What deserves your attention before Peppol

If none of these checks brings up a requirement, nothing in what was read forces action in the short term, and the energy goes more usefully into the QR-bill, the VAT statement and bank reconciliation, which come back every week in an SME. If one of them brings up a requirement, it carries a deadline and a precise format, and it is that deadline that commands the choice between the three routes described above.

In both cases, the decision is taken on dated facts rather than on pages written for other markets. An article intended for Germany or France describes a regulatory framework that is not ours, and a vendor brochure is not a register. The list of certified providers published by OpenPeppol, the Peppol directory, SIX's list of eBill network partners and the list of Swissdec-certified programs are freely consultable, and they are what decide.

Frequently asked questions

Can software that does not document Peppol still produce a structured invoice?

Producing a structured file and making it travel on Peppol are two distinct things. SelectLine thus documents outputs in XRechnung and ZUGFeRD format, and Abacus support for Factur-X and UBL, without being certified Peppol providers themselves. The file therefore sometimes already exists, and it is the routing that remains to be organised with an access point.

Do you need a particular subscription to open your software's API?

Access terms vary greatly from one vendor to another. Odoo's external API is available only on the Custom plan at 37,40 EUR per user per month, SelectLine includes its own from the Premium edition at CHF 119.- per user per month, smallinvoice opens its own from the STARTER plan at CHF 15 per month, while WinBIZ reserves the API key for approved partners and Infoniqa has its own installed on an IIS server at the client's, with a signed processing agreement. This question is settled before any discussion of format.

Can you receive eBill invoices, and not only send them?

It depends on the product, and the asymmetry is frequent. Crésus's documentation indicates that Crésus Facturation cannot receive eBill invoices, while WinBIZ documents sending as well as receiving through PostFinance's e-invoicing platform, and Abacus is referenced at SIX for sending and receiving electronic documents. An SME that wants to eliminate the entry of its supplier invoices has to check this direction of travel, not only the eBill logo.

Does Peppol replace the QR-bill?

No. The QR-bill is the Swiss standard of the payment document, produced by all the programs examined, and it serves domestic collection. Peppol is a routing channel for structured invoices between management systems, which a company adds only if a customer asks for it.

If you move your invoicing to another tool, what becomes of the history?

That is the blind spot of the third route, and it is checked before signing. WinBIZ writes that access to WinBIZ Cloud data ceases at the end of the contract and recommends archiving the accounts as PDF before leaving, its subscription moreover running over an initial period of twelve months renewed tacitly with three months' notice. bexio documents PDF and Excel exports, while Odoo in local installation gives access to the PostgreSQL database and to a full dump.
