Odoo in Switzerland, what the localisation really covers, version by version

Community and Enterprise do not carry the same Swiss functions

Odoo comes in two editions. Community is published as open code and installs freely, without support or version upgrades according to the editions page read on 23 August 2026. Enterprise is rented per user and adds a series of applications that weigh heavily in a Swiss project, among them Payroll, Studio, expense recognition, the spreadsheet, timesheet validation and the Amazon connector. A French-speaking Swiss SME intending to handle its salaries in the same tool as its accounts therefore looks at Enterprise, or at a third-party module.

The rates displayed on 23 August 2026 fit in three lines. One App Free stays at zero euros per month, limited to a single application and served on Odoo Online, with an unlimited number of users. Standard is announced at 24,90 euros per user per month, Custom at 37,40 euros, a promotional rate of 19,90 and 29,90 euros applying to the first twelve months. These amounts are denominated in euros, which introduces a conversion and an exchange exposure into a budget kept in francs.

The vendor targets SMEs of 5 to 250 staff, typically from three to five users, whose activity spans several trades rather than being reduced to invoicing. That functional breadth explains much of the product's appeal, and it also explains why the Swiss examination must be done building block by building block, since not every one has reached the same degree of local maturity.

Programmable access depends on the plan subscribed to, not on the version number

Odoo's external interface has long existed as XML-RPC and JSON-RPC, and version 19 documents a new JSON-2 interface. Authentication goes through credentials or through an API key since version 14, with documented revocation and rotation. Technically, there is plenty to work with. The restriction is commercial. The vendor's documentation writes that data access through the external interface is available only on the Custom plans, so neither on One App Free nor on Standard.

That sentence often decides a project's entire architecture. An SME on Standard wishing to feed Odoo from its online shop, its site tool or its client portal switches to Custom, or leaves Odoo Online. The same documentation specifies that no equivalent limit applies on an installation at the client's or on Odoo.sh. The hosting choice and the programmable-access choice thus form one and the same decision, and it arises before signing.

QR-bill, statement grids and ISO 20022, what the localisation carries

The Swiss localisation loads through the l10n_ch module and through the Switzerland module. It brings the Swiss taxes and the grids of the statement form 302, 342, 400 and 405. The rates in force since 1 January 2024 are 8,1 per cent at the standard rate, 2,6 per cent at the reduced rate and 3,8 per cent for accommodation, according to the Federal Tax Administration. On the collection side, the Swiss QR-bill is covered, and grouped payment orders go out as XML ISO 20022 in the Swiss variant pain.001.001.03.ch.02.

The point that most surprises decision-makers concerns the documentation itself. The official Swiss localisation page, read on 23 August 2026 in version 19 as in the French version 17, still describes the BVR payment slip and the 2018 move to the 7,7 per cent rate. It mentions neither the QR-bill, nor eBill, nor Peppol, nor Swissdec. The product delivered is therefore further along than the page meant to describe it, which chiefly penalises whoever builds their case from the site.

The only honest way to know what a given version covers is to install it, load the localisation, then produce an invoice, a statement and a payment order on representative data. A document that came out of the machine is worth more than a tick in a comparison table.

Swiss payroll is Swissdec certified, at the basic level and on two ELM standards

The official Swissdec register, read on 23 August 2026, lists Odoo S.A. with the product Odoo at the Swissdec certified basic level, certificate number 1203.25, for the ELM 5.0 and ELM 5.3 standards. It is a certification obtained by the vendor itself, which remains uncommon for a non-Swiss player. The ELM 5.5 standard's register does not show Odoo on the day of reading, and the certified plus level, which adds KLE and SUA, does not figure in the product's file either.

A second route exists. The Swiss partner braintec AG is entered in the register for Lohnbuchhaltung für Odoo, at the certified basic level and for the ELM 5.0 standard, certificate number 1103.24. Before deciding between the two, the question is put to the compensation fund and to the accident insurer, on the ELM standard they expect and on the transmissions that must be covered. Peppol is a real strength, eBill calls for a separate examination

Peppol is where Odoo takes a clear lead over many products sold in Switzerland. Version 19's documentation states that Odoo acts itself as an access point and as an SMP, and that Switzerland figures among the countries eligible for registration. The documented outbound formats cover BIS Billing 3.0, XRechnung CIUS, NLCIUS, Factur-X and ZUGFeRD, FatturaPA and Facturae. For an SME supplying an administration or a European principal, that is ground few vendors present in Switzerland document as clearly.

eBill presents itself differently. As of 23 August 2026, the vendor's official sources do not document the sending of invoices into SIX's eBill network. The building blocks in circulation, eBill_PostFinance and eBill_PayNet, come from the OCA community and are not maintained by the vendor. The absence of documentation is not proof of the absence of a function, but it shifts the burden of verification onto the company. Bank reconciliation and place of hosting, two decisions to be taken early

Bank synchronisation assumes a valid Enterprise subscription. The six providers cited in the documentation are Plaid, Yodlee, Salt Edge, Ponto, Enable Banking and Basiq, and none is documented there as explicitly covering Switzerland on the day of reading. For a French-speaking Swiss company, that means the entry of movements is prepared by file, in camt or by statement import, with allocation rules to be written. It is a work item to be framed from the design stage rather than a detail at the end of the job.

The place of hosting deserves an explicit and written decision. Odoo's privacy policy announces regions in the United States, in Canada, in France, in Belgium, in Singapore, in Taiwan, in India, in Saudi Arabia and in Australia. No Swiss data centre figures there as of 23 August 2026, the closest region being France or Belgium. A company that insists on keeping its data in Switzerland then installs Odoo on its own premises or at a Swiss host, which the open code and the PostgreSQL database make practicable with no technical lock.

What an SME gains by checking before committing

Nothing of the above disqualifies Odoo. These observations say only that the answer to the question "does it hold in Switzerland" depends on the version, on the modules installed, on the plan subscribed to and on the place of hosting, four variables that are readable on no product page. Here are the points worth testing in a demonstration base set up on the version envisaged, before any decision.

The vendor has no office in Switzerland, so implementation and local support rest entirely on its partner network. Local follow-up is contracted with one of them; it is not deduced from the product's reputation, and it is worth asking on which versions and on which modules the prospective partner actually works day to day.
